Steps to Become a Home Inspector in Rhode Island

Pass the PSI National Home Inspector Exam (NHIE)

Submit documentation that you have passed the PSI National Home Inspector Exam, which covers home inspection standards and practices. The NHIE consists of 200 multiple-choice questions across three domains and has a time limit of four hours. Each attempt costs approximately $225. Taking a prep course is recommended to improve your chances of passing on the first attempt.

Provide Proof of Experience

  • For Home Inspector License: You must provide documentation showing you have completed at least 100 home inspections.
  • For Associate Home Inspector License: Submit proof of completing 50 home inspections under the supervision of a licensed home inspector.

Obtain Insurance

Provide certificates of liability insurance and errors and omissions insurance (minimum $500,000 in coverage), naming the Rhode Island Contractors’ Registration and Licensing Board (CRLB) as the certificate holder. If you have employees, you must also provide proof of worker’s compensation insurance.

Submit the Application and Pay the Fee

Pay the $200 license fee for two years. Payments can be made online, or by mailing a check to:
