Submit a dated and signed application form to the West Virginia State Fire Marshal’s Office.
Provide a criminal record report with fingerprints from both the West Virginia State Police and the FBI.
Provide proof of general liability insurance with at least $250,000 in coverage.
Successfully pass the NHIE administered by the Examination Board of Professional Home Inspectors (EBPHI). The NHIE consists of 200 multiple-choice questions across three domains and has a time limit of four hours. Each attempt costs approximately $225. Taking a prep course is recommended to improve your chances of passing on the first attempt.
Complete an 80-hour home inspection course approved by the state of West Virginia.
Include a copy of your high school diploma or GED and a valid West Virginia business license issued by the West Virginia Department of Tax and Revenue.
Submit a $150 check or money order payable to the “West Virginia State Fire Marshal’s Office” (no cash).
