Launching a Home Inspection Business as a Female Entrepreneur

April 17, 2018

After years in corporate America then being a stay-at-home mom and home-schooling her three kids, Erica Miller found she was ready to return to the workforce.

She’d always had an affinity for entrepreneurship. But she struggled to find a viable business, until she ran into an old friend at the grocery store. He mentioned he owned WIN Home Inspection and would soon be retiring. Miller thought it could be a perfect match.

“I really liked what he had to say about WIN,’’ Miller said. “I could tell the company had integrity from the top down.’’

WIN Home Inspection aims to bring knowledge and professionalism to the home inspection business. The company works to assist home buyers and home sellers fully understand a home. Miller also knew there were many benefits to joining an established, successful national franchise.

Natural Entrepreneur

Miller decided to buy out her friend and became a WIN franchisee in 2013. Drawing on her existing leadership skills, she quickly grew to employ two inspectors, including the previous owner as a master inspector.

The home inspection industry is predominantely male, which makes Miller’s success even more remarkable. She now hopes to expand her team and eventually have inspectors – and even became an inspector herself. Miller has sustained 10-15 percent growth each year and hopes to continue this success.

There’s No Place like Home

Miller has always had an open door policy. She has housed various community members in need through youth exchange programs, even took on a foreign exchange student on top of it all. It’s fitting that her focus on the home – and who’s in it – pours over into her work.

Through home inspections she’s able to make the home buying or selling process more straightforward and informative for her clients.

“We have a lot of elderly homeowners in our community. It’s so rewarding to provide professional and educational service to them,” Miller said. “We have even been able to help them with small projects, when possible.”

Miller has found yet another home with the WIN Home Inspection family, and she continues to set an example for other emerging business owners. She hopes that her work encourages other women to get involved in home inspection, or any new business.

“Don’t take no for an answer. You’re skills are valuable and you can continue to grow,” said Miller.
